Memorial avenue in Sobibor (Eastern Poland)
The memorial project that was initiated by the “Bildungswerk Stanislaw Hantz”, the memorial place Sobibor and the Dutch “Stichting Sobibor” was encouraged by us from its beginning.
To create a dignified place of dolour and remembrance, since October 2003 trees are planted and stones are set on the territory of the ancient extermination camp Sobibor along the last way of the deportees. The stones sustain the names of people who were murdered here, to make their personal destinies become apparent.
“Surely these stones cannot embody the endless mental and physical distress each individual human had to suffer.
But every stone should tell us – not 250000 human beings were murdered here, no, one human being was murdered here – and this has happened just at this place 250000 times”-”
(Ernst Klein at the opening of the memorial avenue on the 14th October 2003 in Sobibor)
Even from the district Kassel more than 500 Jewish people were deported through Lublin to Sobibor in the end of May and August 1942 and murdered on the day of their arrival.
We made it our business to bear the victims from our region in remembrance on this memorial avenue. By the help of many contributors we could already construct memorial stones for murdered citizens from Volkmarsen, Vöhl, Breuna, Kassel and Gudensberg. We hope that we can motivate people in many other places o our district to finance memorial stones for the murdered people from their hometown.
In the last year the way of the memorial avenue was completed. In April of this year the participants of a work camp of the nature friends NRW and the “Bildungswerk Stanislaw Hantz, have planted the missing trees along the memorial avenue, what have been 328 young pines. Now there are overall 529 trees in the memorial avenue.
102 trees are already furnished with stones, which should remember to the people who have been murdered in Sobibor. For 427 more stones contributors and facilitators must be found.
In the last year in the small museum of the memorial place Sobibor a room was established, in which you can find biographical materials to the people for whom there is a stone in the memorial avenue.
